{"id":487,"date":"2014-12-12T01:41:40","date_gmt":"2014-12-12T01:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/?p=487"},"modified":"2014-12-12T01:49:08","modified_gmt":"2014-12-12T01:49:08","slug":"how-big-is-your-botox-needle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/how-big-is-your-botox-needle\/","title":{"rendered":"How big is your BOTOX needle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Different Sizes for\u00a0BOTOX Cosmetic needles<\/h2>\n<p>When I first trained to perform BOTOX injections. \u00a0I\u00a0used 30 gauge needles. \u00a0I think these are still the most popular needles used for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botoxcosmetic.com\">BOTOX Cosmetic<\/a>\u00a0made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/who-is-allergan\/\">Allergan<\/a>. \u00a0But as I got into vein sclerotherapy with Asclera, I started using smaller needles and one day I thought, why not use the smaller needle for BOTOX. \u00a0My wife at the time was skeptical, and I gave it a try and it worked very very well. \u00a0This was back in 2006. \u00a0Now I think the use of smaller than 30 gauge needles for BOTOX has caught on. \u00a0The smaller needles tend to be much more expensive, but I think it&#8217;s worthwhile.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-489\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/10805697_10152912857204650_2503206641467878286_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/10805697_10152912857204650_2503206641467878286_n.jpg\" alt=\"That is not a small BOTOX needle. No real needles were injected in the making of this photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Disclaimer: \u00a0Photo above is of a model, not a real patient. \u00a0The doctor in the picture above is Calvin Lee, but not Calvin Lee, MD. \u00a0(Both people in the picture have the same name).<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Smaller is usually better<\/h3>\n<p>A\u00a0smaller needle used for Botox is usually better. \u00a0 Smaller needles hurt less, bruise less, and cause less damage to surrounding tissues such as nerves and blood vessels. \u00a0But there&#8217;s a point where a smaller needle might blunt more quickly or bend. \u00a0So in my mind there&#8217;s a sweet spot for picking the right sized BOTOX needle.<\/p>\n<h3>32 gauge needle<\/h3>\n<p>For me, the right sized BOTOX needle is a 32 gauge needle (smaller than a 30 gauge). \u00a0I am also currently trying out the possibility of <strong>33 gauge<\/strong> needles. \u00a0The larger the gauge, the smaller the needle. \u00a0a 32 gauge needle roughly .23 mm in outer diameter. \u00a0a 33 gauge needle is .21 mm in outer diameter. \u00a0Compare that to a standard 30 gauge needle which is .31 mm in outer diameter.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m slightly concerned that the 33 gauge needle will dull quicker, but I still need more experience with the 33 gauge needle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Needle_gauge_comparison_chart\">Wikipedia has a needle gauge comparison chart for diameters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The manufacturer of the needle matters<\/h3>\n<p>The different brands of needles have vastly different needles in my mind. \u00a0Some are sharper, the bevel is different, and the ability to stay sharp is different among the brands. \u00a0I have also found that needles will be slightly different from one to another &#8211;
