{"id":373,"date":"2014-11-26T03:48:33","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T03:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/?p=373"},"modified":"2014-12-15T07:07:35","modified_gmt":"2014-12-15T07:07:35","slug":"does-botox-hurt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/does-botox-hurt\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Botox Hurt?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botox\/\">BOTOX <\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>shots<\/strong><\/span> hurt?<\/h2>\n<p>That&#8217;s a better rephrasing of the question of &#8220;Does Botox Hurt?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is a question I get in my <a title=\"Modesto Botox Practice\" href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\">Modesto Botox Practice<\/a> &#8211; Surgical Artistry &#8211; almost every single day. \u00a0It&#8217;s a difficult one to answer because everyone is different. \u00a0But I&#8217;m going to attempt to answer it in this blog.<\/p>\n<h3>The quick answers from me:<\/h3>\n<p>It is sometimes tempting to answer with: &#8220;Let&#8217;s try it and see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or, sometimes I&#8217;m tempted to say &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t hurt <strong>me<\/strong> one bit when<strong> I&#8217;m injecting it.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-374\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/EMR-frustrations-Calvin-Lee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-374 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/EMR-frustrations-Calvin-Lee-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"EMR frustrations Calvin Lee\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/EMR-frustrations-Calvin-Lee-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/EMR-frustrations-Calvin-Lee-1024x824.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/EMR-frustrations-Calvin-Lee.jpg 1676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not to worry, I don&#8217;t use a hammer when injecting BOTOX.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>OK, some serious thoughts on the topic of BOTOX pain:<\/h3>\n<p>In general, most people think that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botox\/\"> BOTOX shots<\/a> hurt a little bit but is bearable. \u00a0I would venture and say that perhaps people even look forward to coming back for BOTOX shots. \u00a0Perhaps they forget how painful the shots could be. \u00a0I get BOTOX injections myself, and I would say that they hurt a little bit but not enough for me to complain about it. \u00a0But I also think that there are variables to what causes pain with BOTOX injections:<\/p>\n<h3>What are some causes of pain with BOTOX shots?<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve divided these into Injector and Patient factors<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211; Injector factors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Injection technique<\/strong> \u00a0&#8211; &#8220;hands of a woman, heart of a lion, eyes of an eagle&#8221; &#8211; a strange mantra passed on to me by a surgery mentor while I was a Surgeon-in-training. \u00a0 There is so much to this topic &#8211; it wouldn&#8217;t all fit here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size of the needle.<\/strong> \u00a0Smaller is usually better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Did we hit bone?<\/strong> ouch! \u00a0But sometimes this is part of the technique to gauge depth. \u00a0Not usually necessary though &#8211; in my humble opinion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is the needle dull?<\/strong> &#8211; a dull needle causes more pain. \u00a0I have found that needles &#8211; even from the same batch might be sharper or duller when brand new out of the box.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Did the needle become dull?<\/strong> \u00a0It could become dull after a few shots (same patient of course!). \u00a0The Botox injector could change the needle after a few shots to start &#8220;fresh.&#8221; \u00a0Or the needle could become dull if it was purposefully or inadvertently &#8220;banged&#8221; against certain anatomic structures such as bone, or it could have been used to extract the Botox from the sterile bottle (not my practice &#8211; though).<\/li>\n<li><strong>How often are we going to change the needle?<\/strong> \u00a0Changing it often is a good thing, especially with the smaller needles. \u00a0Smaller needles dull pretty quickly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Did we hit a nerve?<\/strong> \u00a0This would hurt.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Did we hit a blood vessel?<\/strong> \u00a0This would hurt too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8211; Patient factors<\/h3>\n<p>These are just my thoughts from my experience of injecting Botox patients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nervous patients usually <strong>feel<\/strong> more pain.<\/li>\n<li>Tensed muscles usually <strong>get<\/strong> more pain.<\/li>\n<li>Patients who squirm\u00a0around during injections usually <strong>suffer<\/strong> more pain.<\/li>\n<li>Patients who haven&#8217;t experienced raising children (or birthing them) usually <strong>experience<\/strong> more pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Summary about pain with BOTOX shots<\/h3>\n<p>Pain is a very individual experience. \u00a0But I&#8217;m glad to report that lots of patients like their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botox\/\">BOTOX\u00a0<\/a>visits and <strong>come back regularly for more BOTOX\u00a0visits.<\/strong> \u00a0I think that tells me that it isn&#8217;t a really terrible pain. \u00a0And I consider myself to be the biggest <strong>CHICKEN<\/strong> in the world (just ask my wife the Plastic Surgeon), and I think that BOTOX shots are just fine for myself.<\/p>\n<p>My wife, Dr. Tammy Wu, by the way, won the <a title=\"Best Cosmetic Surgeon Modesto\" href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\/botoxblog\/best-cosmetic-surgeon-award\/\">Best Cosmetic Surgeon award<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n<h5>Disclaimer:<\/h5>\n<p>I&#8217;m vegan, I need to find a different word for &#8220;<strong>CHICKEN<\/strong>.&#8221; &#8211; perhaps a future blog. \u00a0Please see your own injector\u00a0regarding Botox Pain Perception questions. \u00a0Reading this blog does\u00a0not automatically make me your doctor. \u00a0Read at your own risk. \u00a0Do not try this at home. \u00a0The FDA has nothing to do with this web page.<\/p>\n<h5>Please visit my <a title=\"Modesto Botox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\">Modesto Botox Home Page<\/a>\u00a0for more important information.<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\">Modesto Botox Home Page<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do BOTOX shots hurt?
